The Amazing American Fitness & Fatness Paradox

LS247-300x210“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results.”

                                Albert Einstein

The amazing American fitness & fatness paradox: we have more fitness centers, fitness gadgets, iPhone exercise apps, athletic shoes sales, and more health science research than ever and yet still….. the majority of our citizens are growing fatter, sicker and more depressed each year.

Meanwhile our weight loss industry, diet food companies and Big Pharma have seen their profits hit all time records. The human result are far from glorious: the American weight loss industry has a 90% failure rate according to the few studies that looked at result 1 year after the programs. But the industry players can laugh all the way to the bank as their profits and their markets continue to ramp up with each pound of weight that is lost as it will likely soon be regained. Then Yo Yo diets get recycled and re-branded with new celebrities and new flavors and the show goes on.

The show includes an estimated 75 million American dieters who continue hoping for the elusive diet secret. From the outside, for some people it can seem that dieting has become almost a hobby or a way of life.  In fact most dieters in America start 4 weight loss diets per year, according to Marketdata Inc. Of these near 80% tend to do a DIY approach at home but again without much real success.

Sadly It reminds me of victims who pay the weight loss diet bills and only to see their dreams crushed on the creaky weight loss diet roller coaster. This leads to despair and finally many just throw in the towel and accept a mediocre unhealthy life as if it is the normal natural thing to do.

This leads to sad situations, that we all have seen in America, of overfed friends, nieghbors or family who are suffering with chronic health problems and on multiple medications  ( high blood pressure, erectile disfunction, diabetes, ADD, or depression) yet still eat junk food daily while avoiding physical activity.

A trip to any American shopping mall makes the sad results evident. Why is this not a national scandal?….. We are creating a health care nightmare near  2 out of 3  American adults now over-fat or even obese?

Worst than that is among our American kids are getting fatter faster and younger than ever before with 3 times more childhood obesity than in 1980.  This is linked to the rise in diabetes, and the loss of mojo for many including fertility problems, depression and more.

But you probably know much of this so lets talk about you OK?…. So why are you here and what do you really want?……I could be wrong but for starters, I will guess that you found your way here as you would like to help yourself or someone you love. Feel free to leave your reasons or questions below.

This might mean to finally starting to down a new lifestyle path as get rid of stomach fat that is hanging around the waste line, gain more energy and more confidence and enjoy a better life. 1. We’re not recommending you ditch your exercise routine and sit on your couch popping handfuls of chips. But TV isn’t the weight loss devil that many experts make it out to be, particularly if you use it to make you smile and laugh. Here’s why: Stress takes an enormous toll on your health (research shows it can increase belly fat and slow down weight loss), and laughing is the perfect stress-relieving, fat releasing antidote. What’s more, it’s a pretty potent calorie burner in its own right. When British researchers looked into the number of calories burned by intense laughing and compared it to the calorie burn of other daily activities (strength training, running, even vacuuming), they found that an hour of intense laughter can burn as many calories—up to 120—as a half hour hitting it hard at the gym!

  2. If you’ve ever had a diet fail because it wasn’t practical long-term, you may want to try a weight loss resort. From no-nonsense health clinics to luxurious spa-like experiences, these resorts are a far cry from the fat camps image that has been around for decades. Most weight loss resorts encourage healthy living and eschew unrealistic and impractical diets. So whether you’re looking to lose weight or gain knowledge about nutrition and health, here are 10 award-winning resorts that can help.

  3. Weight loss occurs when an individual is in a state of negative thermodynamic flux: when the body is expending more energy (i.e. in work and metabolism ) than it is consuming (i.e. from food or other nutritional supplements), it will use stored reserves from fat or muscle, gradually leading to weight loss.

  4. There is a general perception that almost no one succeeds in long-term maintenance of weight loss. However, research has shown that ≈20% of overweight individuals are successful at long-term weight loss when defined as losing at least 10% of initial body weight and maintaining the loss for at least 1 y. The National Weight Control Registry provides information about the strategies used by successful weight loss maintainers to achieve and maintain long-term weight loss. National Weight Control Registry members have lost an average of 33 kg and maintained the loss for more than 5 y. To maintain their weight loss, members report engaging in high levels of physical activity (≈1 h/d), eating a low-calorie, low-fat diet, eating breakfast regularly, self-monitoring weight, and maintaining a consistent eating pattern across weekdays and weekends. Moreover, weight loss maintenance may get easier over time; after individuals have successfully maintained their weight loss for 2–5 y, the chance of longer-term success greatly increases. Continued adherence to diet and exercise strategies, low levels of depression and disinhibition, and medical triggers for weight loss are also associated with long-term success. National Weight Control Registry members provide evidence that long-term weight loss maintenance is possible and help identify the specific approaches associated with long-term success.
